Stevens County, Minnesota, was established on February 20, 1862. It is named after statesman Isaac Ingalls Stevens, who had this county named for him seven years after a legislative clerical error denied him that honor in 1855 for Stearns County. The county seat of Stevens County is Morris, Minnesota.

Thomas Thomasson, his wife Jorgine and one-year-old daughter Maria arrived in Stevens County via an ox team in July 1867. The first permanent settlers a small group of Norwegians, had arrived the year before. In his later life, Thomasson compiled three journals which include reminisces describing events and people of the early days in Stevens County. Thomasson's journals are on file at the Stevens County Historical Society.

Todays Stevens County residents still celebrate the pioneering spirit of those early settlers of western Minnesota. Theirs was a story of indomitable hope; the transformation of the great expanse of prairie into what has been called "one of the most prosperous and promising counties in the western part of the state." The earliest settlers to Stevens County were awed by the immensity of the area--its beauty and strength, its endless possibilities. They respected the land and the power of the weather as they sacrificed and labored to build new lives in a new world.
